The Phisalys plant is native to Europe and Asia and its name derives from the Latinized Arabic word “al-kakang” which means “Chinese lantern”. The scientific term that indicates it, however, is Physalis alkekengi.

Belonging to the Solanaceae family, in autumn it produces a fruit rich in vitamin C (more than lemon) with a sweet and slightly citrus flavor, used since ancient times as a natural purifier.

It is very beautiful, small, round and yellow-orange in color and is hidden inside thin red or golden leaves which, once opened, transform into a flower, or rather into a small lantern. The hawthorn has many properties. It is especially known in Chinese medicine for its purifying power being very diuretic. In the field of herbal medicine it is used to treat kidney stones and gout. Being a plant rich in mucilages, flavonoids and carotenoids, it is an excellent antioxidant capable of integrating good quantities of vitamin C into the body. Thanks to this vitamin it is able to increase the body’s immune defenses, in particular protecting the stomach, liver and the urinary tract. The physalis is also a skin ally because it helps to counteract and prevent various dermatological problems.
